NZ Bird of the Year

Background

Since 2005, NZ Forest and Bird has run an annual competition for NZ bird of the year.

Previous winners:

2022:

Pīwauwau or rock wren. 

2021:

Pekapeka-tou-roa or New Zealand Long-tailed bat.

How are species assessed

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has a Red List of Threatened species. This classification system has been in use since 1964.

New Zealand has its own threat classification system, which is what most organisations (such as DOC) in NZ use.
